Art Comes To Life

Director of Photography Ashley Barron lensed Simon Harsent's recent directorial venture 'The Faintest Clasp'.

One of 5 short films for ABC iView's ArtBreaks - an arts project of experimentation and collaboration - the piece is a visual realisation of a poem by David Nobay of Marcel WorldWide that plays on the opposing sense of frailty and strength that comes with old age. Spoken by actor John Waters with music by Lindsay Jehan, it was produced by Holly Anderson and The Pool Collective.

Proof that "art comes to life at the ABC".

New Screen Productions Will Generate $219 million In NSW

Via Screen NSW eNews:

"The NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant has announced three major Hollywood animated feature films will be produced in the state.

Mr. Grant also announced funding in 10 new local film and television productions with the combined expenditure in NSW for the three major films and the 10 local productions expected to be more than $219 million.

The award-winning Sydney animation studio Animal Logic will work with Hollywood studio giant Warner Bros to make The LEGO Batman Movie, along with the LEGO spinoff, Ninjago. A third Warner Bros animated feature will be announced at a later date.

Production has begun on Ninjago, with The LEGO Batman Movie scheduled to begin production later this year, and the third animation project to follow after. The NSW Government helped secure the productions through NSW Trade & Investment\'s State Investment Attraction Scheme.

The 10 new film and television projects will cover topics from the national Indigenous Australians referendum, to the life of NSW-born entertainer Peter Allen, and will receive more than $900,000 in NSW Government production funding."

Samsung VR

DP Earle Dresner recently spent 2 weeks in Perth shooting a 7 minute film to promote Samsung’s new Virtual Reality Headset. It’s the story of a mother, Alison, who lives in Perth with her 2 sons and is 9 months pregnant with her 3rd. Her husband, Jace, works 4000km away at a mine in Queensland.

Jace works a 4 weeks on, 1 week off roster so won’t be able to be at the birth of his child. Samsung gave him the next best thing by filming the birth with a 360 degree camera and live streaming it so Jace could watch it on the Samsung Gear VR headset and feel like he was in the room.

“ We spent 4 or 5 days with Alison and the boys showing how difficult it is for her doing it on her own while another crew captured Jace’s isolation in country Qld . The toughest part was then waiting for the call to rush to the hospital for the birth. Obviously filming a live birth was an experience I will never forget and I’m really proud to have been a part of something that brought people together”

The film was shot on Red Epics with Zeiss Superspeed lenses but Earle stresses

“This film is about the purest of human emotions, not gear and lights. Our very small but dedicated crew helped us shoot fast and find the heart of the story”. Watch it here.

DOP Adam Howden Checks In

DOP Adam Howden checked in to let us know he’s updated his reel. He’s been shooting some spots with the gorgeous Shanina Shaik for Just Jeans, here’s a link to one of them featuring Shanina and Sonny Bill Williams.

The spot was shot in a warehouse building in Sydney above a martial arts studio. “The biggest challenge was that we were 3-4 floors up so getting lights up through the windows was out of the question.” Adam’s solution was to shoot using ambient sky light, “If the sun was on one side of the building we’d shoot on the other. This kept the light and mood consistent and then I just added some fill here and there to balance it all out, and some smaller HMIs to key’s when necessary.”

Adam also returned from LA recently where he shot a great content piece for Samsung featuring Australian band Cloud Control. Adam says “I love this combo of the Sony F55 and Zeiss Superspeeds MkIIIs it’s just a great balance between old and new. Shooting around LA’s 6th Street Bridge and warehouse district made this piece instantly recognisable as Los Angeles.

Baby Boom For Di Yee, Director

Directing kids can be demanding, but also the most rewarding of challenges as Diana Yee’s recent experience shows. With a new generation of little people out there, Di’s been making play dates around the region for numerous baby product ad campaigns.

A cute bunch of clever, talented little Individuals feature in her new body of work with kids and babies: a campaign for Baby Cheramy Sri Lanka - a baby care range shot in India, baby milk spots for Nestle and nappies for Huggies - for SEAsia, and a sweet little spot for Woolite Baby Laundry from Reckitt Bencisker Nth America.

For Di, working with kids & babies is happy work- finding the beauty in the moment, the intelligence behind the innocence and paying attention to the little things makes every production infinitely inspiring.

Kathy McKinnon Styles New Lexus Spots

Stylist Kathy McKinnon checked in with some new tvcs and stills from a recent shoot for Lexus produced by Radical Media, agency Saatch i& Saatchi, with world renowned German Director Christian Aeby.

See the new Lexus spots here.

She dressed glamorous models in evening attire that were blasted with water canons. Warm golden lighting, shooting water, gold & metallic dresses, dark men’s smoking jackets and bodies bracing against the force created a strong look.

The evening wear was water tested beforehand to see how it preformed and the final selection was determined by which fabrics created good body shapes, taking into account the high pressure of the water canons.

For an underwater sequence she styled the model in a silk chiffon Akira dress with a floating three meter train. The fabric had been designed with a series of burn holes, which let the water, pass through. It created an image of an ethereal-like mermaid, dark blonde hair and dress colour worked like a treat.

This year the competition boasts a prize pool of $15,000 cash, $20,000 worth of post-production, a guaranteed screening of the winning film on the Movie Extra channel and a return airfare and free registration to the prestigious CineMart International Film Festival Rotterdam, in Netherlands.

DSLR Workshop November 6 and 7

Cinematographer Pieter de Vries ACS has teamed up with one of Australia's finest photographers, Nick Rains to offer a workshop for anyone who has recognised the need to incorporate video into their businesses.

Pieter brings decades of experience as a documentary cinematographer working with high end video and film cameras, and Nick offers the perspective of 28 years as a stills photographer who has recognised and developed the potential of HD video for his business.

Over the past twelve months or so there has been a revolution in image making - DSLR's like the Canon 5D Mark II and now the Sony NEX-VG10 have opened up the possibility of making full HD movies with an amazing cinematic quality.

Stills photographers have been fascinated with the potential of the new features but have often floundered when they realise that making good short movies is nowhere as easy as it looks.

It is certain that understanding and delivering mixed media content will be an incredibly useful tool as the publishing industry transitions to delivery on tablet computers, phones and iPads etc. Print clients are beginning to request video clips from their stills photographers so an understanding of how to produce decent footage will be essential in the future.

Nick and Pieter will cover the necessary hardware, sound recording, video shooting basics and editing software in an easy to digest format over the weekend of November 6-7 at the Newport Mirage Resort on Sydney's northern beaches.

'Tangier' - cinemetographer Simon Ozolins

At the start of 2010, on the back of his Aria award for Empire of The Sun "Walking on a dream" director Josh Logue of The Feds was approached to make a clip for the late, great Billy Thorpe's final album "Tangier". The album was inspired by Thorpe's time in Morocco where the album was written and partly recorded. It was only natural then that Josh and his producer Rebecca Bennett were Morrocco bound with fellow Australians, DOP Simon Ozolins and art director Pete Davies.

Actor Noah Taylor flew in to meet them on location and over the next 8 days ensued the creation of a piece that is a mix between The English Patient, Mad Max and The Fall. Shot on the Canon 5D the piece was edited by Simon Njoo at Guillotine and post done at Fuel VFX. Watch out for the trailer in cinemas from this week.

DP Frank Flick Updates

DP Frank Flick updates his online reel with his personal website to follow in the coming days.

New spots for L’oreal, Levi’s, Korean Tele-Communications giant SK T and Channel Ten’s controversial Station ID ‘Seriously Good TV’ are amongst his recent work.

Frank has also acquired a substantial Canon 1D Mk. IV HD-SLR Kit, including Zeiss manual focus lenses.

’I believe that this format is certainly not suited for every shooting situation, but if you are aware of its restrictions and choose the projects you use it on wisely, you can get fantastic results.
These cameras can give you the beautiful shallow Depth of Field look of a large Format Camera on a modest budget. Due to their small size and weight they are also suitable for many car and motorcycle rig shots.

For more information you can contact Frank on +61-418 698 663

We Love ....DP Katie Milwright's New Spot

This one shot TVC for Dodoni Feta, was shot on location at Maha restaurant in Melbourne, the TVC features George Calombaris and his actual Maitre D'. fish monger and coffee supplier.

The single Steadicam shot was rehearsed all morning and the lighting involved many hidden units and chimera lanterns that were moved into shot at specific moments. Other lighting units were dimmed or illuminated in a well orchestrated fluid movement that never draws attention to itself . The shot sees almost 360 degrees around the space and it was really fun to make it all work. Says DOP Katie Milwright "I think we shot about 18 takes or something till it finally all came together".

EYE Screening at Sydney Film Festival

EYE follows award-winning indigenous photographer, Bindi Cole, as she travels from her Melbourne home to the far north of Australia. She’s been invited by drag performer Foxxy Empire, the alter ego of Tiwi Islander Jason De Santis to document the transgender Sistergirls of his community. She plans to create 12 photographic portraits – positive, celebratory images – and soon realises she must also enlist the help of 'the mother of all Sistergirls' Crystal Love.

As Bindi struggles with the logistics of the shoot and being an outsider in a remote community, she listens to stories of the girls' lives, of family acceptance and rejection, of loneliness and the bond of sisterhood.

It's a truly fabulous film - with amazing characters in an amazing landscape.
I really hope you can make it along!

DP Justin Brickle Shoots The Tumbler

DoP Justin Brickle’s latest feature film, The Tumbler, is a low-budget political thriller/war movie starring Gary Sweet, shot entirely in 15 days in the outskirts of Broken Hill, on the Panasonic HD Varicam.

Despite concerns about weather and the limitations of a small budget, Justin and Director, Marc Gracie, supported by a small but dedicated crew, managed to maintain a consistency of look (the story unfolds over just one day) and get enough coverage to put together all the pieces of the puzzle. It was quite an achievement to shoot a 100-page script in just 15 days - with a few alternative endings to boot.

Justin says; “Shooting small-sized projects like The Tumbler you gain a greater sense of pride when you realize what you managed to pull off against the filmmaking odds. A good reminder that through trial and adversity comes inspiration and innovation”.

After the July launch, Brave Films has hit the ground running with a variety of standout creative productions, sure to catch eyes with their unique style, humour and attention to detail.

Brave Films is more than a TVC production house, with directors who regularly work in feature film, TV as well as music video projects, and draw upon these longer forms for their TVC work.

CHRISTOPHER BENZ has just completed a film for the 2007 IF Awards telecast, a comedy about the Australian Film Industry called 'BERNIE WOLFE - A LIFE IN FILM' starring Geoffrey Rush, Hugo Weaving, Greg Mclean, Clayton Jacobson, Bill Hunter, Sigrid Thornton, Jack Thompson and many more. The film is screening with the Awards night on SBS and SHOWTIME mid-november.

CHRIS and EDWIN MCGILL have directed a high impact comic TVC campaign for Cummins & Partners and Mike Reed Post Production to be released early next year.

In addition, EDWIN has also just directed the COUGAR for GEORGE PATTERSON BATES with very funny results and an impressive car piece for HOLDEN UTE.

Contact Executive Producer Hamish Macdonald for a copy of DVD reels or an email of any relevant work.

BRAVE FILMS office in St Kilda West has edit suites on site and an HD viewing theatre to assist in the production process.

The Sounds of (A)us: DP Justin Brickle Wins Gold ACS Award

The film was written and researched by journalist Lawrie Zion and features interviews with experts, comedians and commentators including Bruce Beresford, Santo Cilauro, Max Gillies, Rachel Griffiths, Akmal Saleh, Bert Newton and Barry Crocker.

Justin was initially concerned about whether a movie about the way people sounded would translate to good vision, but the results speak for themselves – rave reviews & 1.2 million ABC viewers.
"It's a very nice-looking program, a swish bit of work” (news.com.au 7/11/07)

Justin Brickle

The Epic Ford "Drive" TVC

Just added is this panoramic new spot for Director Jon Gwyther, DP Matt Stewart ACS, and Editor Dan Mitchell. Says DP Matt Stewart:
"It was shot in december last year and included locations in New Zealand, China, South Africa and London. We took all our heads of dept  - Rick McMullen gaffer, John Balbi Grip , Camera guys Tov Belling and Lee Mariano, Matt Harris 1stAD, plus Production and Wardrobe. We travelled with an Arri 435, Arri 3 and 2 Bolex’s – one of which we bought in Shanghai. The whole job was shot on Kodak 5218 and a small amount of 7201 for the Bolex’s. The shoot was about 27 days and we literally flew, recced then shot for 2-4 days in each location. The job went very smoothly with the exception of a missing roll of film in China...after a very cold and jet lagged night shooting time lapse in Shanghai. Producer Alex Mooney did a great job pulling it all together with less than a week of pre production and offering up great locations for Jon and I to shoot."
